Francis William Wolk, 94, Crystal City
Francis William Wolk, 94, of Crystal City died Jan. 21, 2023, at Crystal Oaks Nursing Center in Crystal City. Mr. Wolk was a 1946 Crystal City High School graduate and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the 140th Tank Battalion. He worked at the Pittsburg Plate Glass plant in Crystal City for 31 years before retiring in 1978, and he was the past president of Glassworkers Union Local 63, the Glassworkers Credit Union and the Glassworkers Country Club. He also worked as a courier for Boatman’s Bank. He was a member of VFW 3777 and the Korean War Veterans. He was a 30-year volunteer for the Twin City Senior Centers Meals on Wheels program, a 20-year Crystal City Ward 4 election worker, a coach for the Twin City Little League and Atom League baseball program, as well as a former member of the Festus-Crystal City Conservation Club. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crystal City. He was a St. Louis Browns baseball fan and later a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He enjoyed fishing. Born Dec. 28, 1928, in Crystal City, he was the son of the late Rosella (Grither) and Francis Xavier “Frank” Wolk.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years: Shirley Lillian (Curtis) Wolk.
He is survived by two sons: Gregory L. (Jan) Wolk of Arnold and Timothy J. (Terri) Wolk of Crystal City; four grandchildren: Brent (Alexandra) Wolk, Emily Lamar, Kelsey (Dr. Russel Jr.) Kesman and Alex (Brianna) Wolk; and six great-grandchildren: McKenna and Vera Lamar, James and Jude Kesman, and Louis and Piper Wolk, with two more great-grandchildren on the way.
He was preceded in death by four sisters: Patricia Wolk, Dorothy (the late Joe) Alcott, Rose M. (the late Raymond) Stark and Adelaide (the late Irwin) Jones; and a brother: Leroy (the late Jean) Wolk.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 555 Bailey Road, in Crystal City. Burial with full military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Vineyard Funeral Home in Festus.
