Eula Marie (Moore) Schmidt, 95, formerly of French Village, died April 10, 2017, at St. Joe Manor in Bonne Terre. Mrs. Schmidt attended the Quincy, Ill., Girls Academy, Southeast Missouri Teachers College and Mineral Area College before receiving a bachelor’s degree in education in 1961 from Washington University in St. Louis, where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda scholastic fraternity.
She taught elementary school for more than 30 years in St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve and southern Jefferson counties, retiring from the North County R-1 school system in 1979. She was a member of the Missouri State Retired Teachers Association and Mineral Area Retired Teachers Association.
After her retirement, she remained active in church and community activities as well as developing new interests. She obtained a realtor’s license, worked for the U.S. Census Bureau, did substitute teaching and researched the local history of French Village and St. Anne’s Catholic Church, where she was a parish member and served for many years as organist, music leader, Eucharistic minister and lector. She also was an active member of the Old Mines Area Historical Society and enjoyed researching her family genealogy.
She and her husband traveled extensively during retirement, including trips to the Holy Land, the United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland and Germany, as well as many states in the U.S.
Mrs. Schmidt was born April 22, 1921, in Elvins, the daughter of the late William and Mauda (Jansen) Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years: Leon Joseph Schmidt, who died in 2013.
She is survived by three children: Sharon (Dennis) Scherer of Cape Girardeau, Robert (Jane) Schmidt of French Village and William (Louise) Schmidt of French Village; three granddaughters: Tonya (Ron) Ampie, Kimberley (Chris) Bader and Margaret “Maggie” (Chris) Carr; one great-granddaughter: Avery Bader; a sister-in-law: Rosemary Halbert; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was also preceded in death by a son: John Joseph Schmidt; a brother: Melvin Moore; and four sisters: Mary Lawana Moore, Vidamae Hahn, Reva Moore and Loretta Moore.
Mrs. Schmidt chose to donate her body to St. Louis University. Memorial visitation is scheduled from 3-8 p.m. Friday, April 28, at C. Z. Boyer and Son Funeral Home, 313 Benham St., in Bonne Terre, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at St. Anne Church, 15 St. Joseph Street, in Bonne Terre. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of CZ Boyer and Son Funeral Home.
