Eugene “Gene” Akers, 74, of Barnhart died Oct. 19, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis County. Mr. Akers worked for the Tom Lange Company and his independent trucking buisinesses. Born in Kennett, he was the son of the late L.E. Akers and Maudie (Kelley) Bruton.
He is survived by his wife: Mary (Kirby) Akers; one son: James Patrick “Pat” (Karen) Akers of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren: Nichole Akers, Christopher Akers and Ashley Akers; and one brother: Ray (Jan) Bruton of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his stepfather: Elmer Bruton; a son: Michael Eugene Akers; and a sister: Laura (the late Butch) Overton.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Vinyard Hillcrest Funeral Home in Pevelyand from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at McDaniel Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Jeff Purvis. Burial is in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements were under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
