Dr. Louis J. Ortmann, 81, of Festus died July 12, 2018, at his home. Mr. Ortmann was the longtime owner/operator of Dr. Louis J. Ortmann Dentistry in Festus and a member and past president of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of captain. He was a charter member of Our Lady Catholic Church in Festus, where he was the first Parish Council president and served as a lector. Born Aug. 25, 1936, in Le Mars, Iowa, he was the son of the late Regina (Dalhoff) and Henry Ortmann.
He is survived by his wife: Elizabeth “Betsy” (Tiefenbrun) Ortmann; four sons: Greg (Cris) Ortmann of Festus, Mark Ortmann of St. Louis, Steve Ortmann of De Soto and David (Laura) Ortmann of Festus; two daughters: Ann Ortmann of St. Louis and Patty (Brendan) Dennehy of Ashville, N.C.; a sister: Jeanette (Melvin) Koch of Remsen, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Eileen Ortmann of Le Mars, Iowa, and Sandy Ortmann of Remsen, Iowa; 11 grandchildren: Jon (Debbie) Ortmann, Kevin Gass, Michael (Anna) Ortmann, Luke Ortmann, Jake (April) Ortmann, Rachael Ortmann, Allison Ortmann, Sam Ortmann, Madeline Ortmann, Ben Ortmann and Joseph Ortmann; and four great-grandchildren: Justin, Daniel, Matthew, and Zoey Ortmann.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Joe Ortmann, Donald Ortmann and Father Bill Ortmann.
Funeral Mass was held July 17 at Our Lady Church, officiated by Father Jeffrey Maassen, Father Gregory Klump and Father Ted Vitale. Burial with full military honors was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Crystal City. Memorials may be made to Our Lady Church in Festus. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
