Fitzgerald, Jackson

Dr. Jackson “Jack” Fitzgerald, 81, of Pevely died Sept. 24, 2021, at his home. Mr. Fitzgerald was an elementary school teacher in LaGrange, Wyo., for one year, then spent 29 years as a teacher and director of special education at Crystal City High School. Multiple yearbooks have been dedicated in his honor. After he retired, he was an assistant professor at Truman State University in Kirksville as well as Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, supervising student teachers. He also volunteered in nursing homes, caring for elderly loved ones and residents. He enjoyed watching Cardinals’ baseball, taking care of his garden, especially his tomatoes, and watching animals. He was the son of the late John and Gertrude Fitzgerald.

He is survived by his wife: Virginia Fitzgerald of Pevely; a son: Patrick Fitzgerald of St. Charles; a daughter-in-law: Doretha of Pevely; a grandson: Thomas of Pevely; a sister: Karen Dhuwalia of Davie, Fla.; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death a son: Scott; three sisters: Maxine Sutton, Ruth Bunch and Phyllis Fitzgerald; and a brother: Ted Fitzgerald.

Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until a funeral service at noon Saturday, Oct 2, at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins Ave., in Festus. Burial is in the Black River Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Crystal City School District. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
