Charles August Berger, 90, of Festus died Feb. 1, 2020, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Berger was a retired engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation and a member of Our Lady Church in Festus. A Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Elks Lodge1721, the Festus-Crystal City Conservation Club, the Plattin Rock Boat Club and American Legion Post 150 in Ste. Genevieve. He was an avid fisherman and a talented musician who played and repaired violins, fiddles and other stringed instruments. Born Nov. 24, 1929 in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Helen (Boehl) and Elmer Berger.
He is survived by his wife Elfriede (Hafner) Berger; two daughters: Kathe Berger of St. Louis and Nancy Berger of St. Louis; three sons: John (Lisa) Berger of Chesapeake, Va., Thomas (Cathy) Berger of Brick, N.J., and Karl (Donna) Berger of Litchfield, Ill.; 10 grandchildren: Charles J. (Nikki) Berger, Christina Berger, April Hamilton, Max (Amanda) Woltshock, Paul (Vicky) Berger, Sarah Berger, Amy Scherrer, Cassie Solomon, Chelsea Berger and Nikki Berger; and nine great-grandchildren: Madison Berger, Aurora Berger, Sebastian Berger, Avery Saye, Matthew Berger, Lilly Solomon, Emma Matthews, Jackson Smith and Gracie Berger.
He was preceded in death by a daughter: Janet (the late Steve) Scherrer; a grandson: Eric Scherrer; and two sisters: Mary Jane (the late Russell) Meintrup and Ruth (the late Ron) Larsen.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Our Lady Church in Festus, officiated by Father Matthew Cheruparambil. Burial is in the Lakewood Park Cemetery in St. Louis County.
