Charlene Shell King-Barton, 81, of Crystal City died Nov. 24, 2017, at St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis County. Mrs. King-Barton was a homemaker who had previously worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of Good News Community Church in Crystal City and a lifelong volunteer at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Born Sept. 3, 1936, in Dongola, she was the daughter of the late Rita (Sample) and Norman Shell. She was preceded in death by two husbands: Fred King, whom she married Dec. 4, 1962, in St. Louis; and Carl Barton, whom she married in Dec. 2004.
She is survived by a son: Joseph (Lana) King of Cincinnati, Ohio; three daughters: Denise (Tom) Gatto of Hillsboro, Marie Needy of Festus and Jeannie Baumgartner of Festus; two sisters: Carol Costello of Advance and Brenda (L.E.) VanGennip of Marble Hill; 13 grandchildren: Andrea Hackworth, Laura Hackworth, Jayne (Scottie) Lewis, Katie (Casey) Marler, Alyssa Gatto, Aric Gatto, Joseph Baumgartner, Nick Baumgartner, Christopher Baumgartner, Elizabeth Kohler, Alex Henry, Olivia King and Sam King; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter: Deanna Kohler; three brothers: Grant, Bob and Burt Shell; and four sisters: Mary Lou Winchester, Norma Nelson, Velma Bess and Joann Parker.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Morgan Funeral Chapel, 602 S. Vine St., in Advance. Burial will follow in the Dongola Cemetery in Dongola.
