After a Windsor C-1 School District parent complained about the book, “The Hate U Give,” that some students apparently had been assigned, district staff and officials reviewed it and determined students could keep reading it, as long as their parents are OK with it, Superintendent Jason King said.
He said the parent challenged the book and the district’s review and decision about the book all occurred the week of March 27.
“A parent raised a concern regarding the book ‘The Hate U Give’ by Angie Thomas to the administration,” King said. “This was brought to my attention and we looked into the concern and met as a team with the English Department. The book selected has been used previously in the high school.
“Due to the profanity used in the book, we decided to let parents have the choice whether they want their student to read this book or an alternative book selected by the English Department. This option will be communicated in writing to all parents with students in the appropriate classes.
“The parent who raised the concern is pleased with the outcome.”
King, who is in his first year as the Windsor C-1 superintendent, said the book challenge was the first one this school year.
He said the Windsor district has a procedure in place to consider book challenges and the district adhered to it.
“Board policy has been followed,” he said. “In this instance, the matter was resolved satisfactorily to all parties at step 1 of the procedure (board policy KLB-AP(1). I am consistently amazed by the support and investment our parents have in the Windsor C-1 community, and I am grateful to be able to work with their top-notch students each day.”
