Washington State Park isn't technically in Jefferson County -- it's right on the county line of Washington County -- but a pair of events this weekend might make it worth the drive.
In honor of Black History Month, Washington State Park will host a celebration of Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1743 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 16).
CCC Company 1743 was an African American company whose craftsmanship can be seen throughout the park. The open house is free and will take place at the Interpretive Center located near the north entrance to the park.
State park staff will be on hand to discuss the cultural and historical significance of Company 1743 and their unique contribution to the park. Self-guided driving tour maps will be available for those wanting to explore the park and see the stonework and historic construction. There will be photographs and artifacts from Company 1743 on display.
Washington State Park is located on Hwy. 104 10 miles south of De Soto on Hwy. 21. For information, call the park office at 636-586-5768.
While you're in the vicinity, the St. Michael House, on Hwy. 21 and Hwy. CC just across from the park (but after the first entrance) will hold a sale of used items from 8 a.m. to noon.
Items up for sale include used furniture.
The sale will benefit the Rural Parish Workers, which helps families in the area with utility and housing needs.
