2014 Arnold Veterans Day Parade and celebration

Arnold Mayor Ron Counts, left, talks to one of the veterans who participated in last year's Arnold Veterans Day Parade and celebration at the Fox schools campus.

The Arnold Veterans Commission is seeking veterans to participate in its third annual Veterans Day Parade, to be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Local organizations, businesses and residents may take part in the parade, too, but political candidates may not, says Mike Evans, the Veterans Commission chairman.

He said nonprofit organizations may participate in the parade for free, but it costs $25 for businesses to enter.

Those who want to be in the parade are asked to gather at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2211 Tenbrook Road, in Arnold before 10:30 a.m. The parade will proceed from the church west on Tenbrook Road and then cross Jeffco Boulevard into the Fox schools campus, where it will end.

The approximately 5,000 students who attend Fox High, Fox Middle and Fox Elementary schools will be outside to welcome and cheer the veterans as the parade goes by, Evans said.

A small ceremony will be held at the Pole of Hope, a veterans memorial outside the Fox schools Central Office.

Fireworks will be shot off as part of the celebration.

Veterans also are invited to take part in a free luncheon and assembly that the Fox High School Student Council will hold from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the Fox schools campus. The lunch will be held at the Leo C. Peck Media Center – the high school library. The assembly will be at Rickman Auditorium.

Local veterans who would like to attend the lunch and assembly are asked to RSVP by contacting Fox High Student Council sponsor Robin Greene at 636-296-5210 or greene@fox.k12.mo.us.

Vietnam veteran Phil Pippins of Arnold, who was elected in June to the VFW National Council of Administration, will be the Arnold Veterans Day Parade grand marshal.

The Arnold Veterans Commission plans to decorate the parade route with flags prior to the event, Evans said.

Those interested in participating in the Veterans Day Parade may call Arnold City Hall at 636-296-2100 for more information.
