The St. Louis Big Band with Joe Scalzitti will perform Sunday evening (Sept. 16), kicking off the new Sundays at Sunset concert series at Sunset Park along Parkview Drive (behind Festus City Hall).

All the concerts are free and are scheduled to run from 6-8 p.m. at the park’s grandstand. The series is funded with a $13,000 grant from the Festus Tourism Commission.

“I’m hoping for a good turnout so the Tourism Commission can see there’s a demand for it,” said Barb Lowry, the Festus director of sports and marketing events.

Attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on, as well as coolers and refreshments. Concessions also will be available for purchase at the event, Lowry said.

As the name of the St. Louis Big Band with Joe Scalzitti implies, the group performs big band music.

Other concerts in the series include:

■ Sept. 23 – Rivertown Sound, which performs barbershop quartet and 1950s doo wop music.

■ Sept. 30 – The Howlin’ Brothers, a Nashville-based string band known for old-time blues and bluegrass.

■ Oct. 7 – Kim Massie, an acclaimed vocalist who sings blues, gospel, rock, pop, country and R&B.

■ Oct. 14 – Borderline, a country music group.
