A jury trial has been set for the woman accused in a fatal shooting at an apartment complex outside Holts Summit in April.
A jury trial for Heather Smith will begin March 13, 2026, at the Boone County Courthouse and resume March 17, according to online court records. The trial may take up to five days, court records state.
Smith is charged with second-degree murder, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and endangering the welfare of a child in connection to the shooting death of 38-year-old Kara Dills on April 13.
Court documents say Smith was involved in an argument with several people when she pulled a gun and pointed it at people. Dills allegedly got her own gun and hit Smith in the face, which caused the gun to go off; the shot grazed a man's forehead, according to court documents.
Dills started to walk away when Smith shot her in the stomach, a probable cause statement said.
A Callaway County judge on April 28 granted a $150,000 bond for Smith.
A pre-trial conference for Smith is set for Feb. 20 at the Callaway County Courthouse, according to court records.
