The Cole County Sheriff's Office said it has been made aware of a scam circulating across mid-Missouri.
According to a Facebook post from the sheriff's department, there are callers claiming to be deputies. The callers falsely state that there is a warrant for their arrest, and demand money for their warrant or say they do not need to go to the police department or sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office said law enforcement will never ask for payment over the phone or notify someone of a warrant over the phone.
The office said to never share personal information over the phone with deputies.
Scammers often pressure victims with threats of arrest, fines or legal action to create a sense of urgency, according to the post.
The sheriff's office said if you are uncertain, hang up and call the official number of the agency they claim to represent. Do not use the number provided by the caller.
Those who believe they have been contacted by a scammer are encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 573-634-9160.
