• Boone County sheriff's deputies are investigating after a human body was found inside a trash can on Sunday. Fishermen spotted the City of Columbia container floating in Perche Creek near the Missouri River access. Authorities have turned the body over to the medical examiner's office.
• Columbia police say a break-in at Art Underground Downtown Saturday was not exactly hard to trace. Justin Ray Murphy, 29, a homeless man whose listed address is the day center on Wilkes Blvd., is charged with burglary and felony property damage. Police say the studio had a broken window, damaged doors, a torn-down exit sign and green graffiti on the floor. The probable cause statement says Murphy’s Google account was open on the owner’s laptop. Police later found him on East Broadway — and say he was wearing an Art Underground T-shirt that had been stolen.
• Highway patrol troopers are investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash on U.S. 63 this morning north of Columbia. It happened about 8:30 near Highway 124 East. Authorities confirmed one person died at the scene.
• The City of Columbia invites the public to meet three finalists for the Communications director position on May 20. Christopher Ave, Rob Jones, and Shayne Martin will be at the Columbia Training Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
• Boone County commissioners will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed jail sales tax for the Aug. 4 ballot. The sheriff’s office wants voters to consider a three-eighths-cent Prop L sales tax to fund construction of a new Boone County Jail with about 570 beds. The hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. in the Boone County Commission Chambers at the Roger B. Wilson Boone County Government Center in Columbia. County officials say the current jail is often limited to about 190 detainees. As of May 5, Boone County had 201 detainees housed in 12 other Missouri counties. Out-of-county housing costs rose from $499,000 in 2022 to more than $2.5 million in 2025.
• Two westbound I-70 ramps in Columbia are closing Monday night for construction. Crews will place temporary barriers at Rangeline Street and Providence Road starting at 8 p.m. Drivers must find alternate routes until the ramps reopen Tuesday at 2 a.m. MoDOT officials say the work is part of the ongoing lane expansion project.
• Former Mizzou football coach Gary Pinkel faces a bench trial today in Camden County. The 74-year-old was stopped near the Lake of the Ozarks last July on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Pinkel allegedly refused a chemical test during the stop.
