■ Once a year, at monuments and cemeteries, we count the cost. But no one can know the cost of war like the soldiers who have survived combat. For them, Memorial Day is not just the last Monday of May, but a walk of life. Monte “Bud” McBroom of Sulphur Springs recalls the 12 hours he spent on an October day in 1952 as the most harrowing of his 88 years. He was near the 38th Parallel on the Asian peninsula of Korea, at a place called Triangle Hill. See Gordon Bess’ Page 1 feature story.
■ Larry Sanders, who had served 11 years in two stints on the De Soto Board of Education, resigned last week, saying he had accidentally moved outside school district boundaries in June 2016 and was resigning to avoid becoming a “distraction” for the district. See Kevin Carbery’s story.
■ Byrnes Mill aldermen and Public Works director Tony Whitby are considering whether the city’s recycling drop-off site should be closed. Byrnes Mill has operated the recycling drop-off facility, 4197 Lower Byrnes Mill Road, since 1993, but the facility, which used to bring in revenue for Byrnes Mill, now costs the city money and only 20 percent of those who drop off recyclables are Byrnes Mill residents, Whitby said. See Tracey Bruce’s story.
■ It looks like sidewalk construction will soon begin along Tenbrook Road, about 10 years after Arnold city officials began planning for the project. The City Council agreed April 6 to award a $319,351.16 construction contract to Spencer Contracting Co. in Arnold to build the sidewalks. See Kim Robertson’s story.
■ Jefferson County residents who want to recycle but don’t have a waste hauler who offers the service now have a place to go – Hillsboro. A pair of recycling bins are now occupying spaces in the parking lot of the Jefferson County Administration Center, 729 Maple St. See Steve Taylor’s story.
■ Editorial Page editor Patrick Martin dives in to his subject this week – the salvation of the Jefferson County pool after a protracted community protest over its proposed closure.
■ Sports editor Russell Korando writes this week about Hillsboro junior Josef Marschuetz, who broke his thigh in a 2015 football tackle, but has come all the way back to qualify for the Missouri State High School Activities Association track meet in Jefferson City on Friday and Saturday.
*** Have a safe Memorial Day holiday!
