Rockwood School District Superintendent Mark Miles is retiring, after two years on the job, the district announced today (April 9).

Miles, 49, told Rockwood Board of Education members during a closed meeting Thursday night (April 8) about his decision to retire at the end of this school year, district officials said in a written statement.

Miles’ last day at Rockwood will be June 30.

He is being paid $225,000 this school year, the same salary he has received since he took on the job on July 1, 2019, following former Rockwood Superintendent Eric Knost’s departure after the 2018-2019 school year.

When Miles was hired, he received a three-year deal, and in March, the seven-member school board voted unanimously to extend his contract by a year, extending it to June 2023.

School board member Loralee Mondl, who was the board president when Miles’ contract was extended, said the board planned to discuss Miles’ salary in June.

The school board voted unanimously Thursday to accept Miles’ retirement, Mondl said.

Miles said he has mixed emotions about leaving the district.

“This is a bittersweet transition,” he said in a letter he sent to district parents. “I am thankful for my time in the Rockwood School District. It is truly a special place with remarkable people providing exceptional opportunities for our students.”

The school board also announced it plans to select an interim superintendent to lead the district next school year and then next fall to begin a search for a more permanent replacement to take over as superintendent for the 2022-2023 school year.

Mondl said it is too late in the year to start a full search process for a new superintendent to take over next school year.

“We take this responsibility very seriously as we search for the most qualified superintendent to lead our highly rated school district,” the board said in a message to district stakeholders. “Our district is fortunate to have remarkable students, talented and engaged staff members, a cohesive school board and a strong, caring community. Together, we define school district excellence.”

Miles said he will turn 50 on April 24 and has worked in education for 26 years.

Before coming to Rockwood, he was the superintendent of Indian Hill Exempted Village School District in Cincinnati, Ohio.
