A 40-year-old Fenton woman was struck by a bullet in the left leg when a van she was driving was shot at Tuesday night (Jan. 21) in the parking lot of a restaurant in unincorporated Fenton, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The woman was transported to an area hospital with what is believed to be a non-life-threatening injury. She was able to speak with investigators Tuesday, Sheriff’s Office public safety information coordinator Grant Bissell said.
Bissell said he did not have an update on her condition as of this morning (Jan. 22).
The Sheriff’s Office was called at about 6:45 p.m. to a shopping plaza in the 1600 block of S. Old Hwy. 141, where the shooting occurred. The woman had arrived at the plaza in a 2006 Honda Odyssey with a male passenger, an 18-year-old Fenton man, the report said.
The van parked next to a white GMC SUV in the center aisle of parking spaces at the plaza, near the entrance to Borgetti’s Bar and Grill, 1667 S. Old Hwy. 141. The SUV had arrived at the parking lot about 10 minutes before the van, and a person had gotten out of the SUV and walked away from the plaza, according to the report.
After the van parked, the male passenger got out and started talking to the occupants in the SUV. The Sheriff’s Office reported that up to three people were in the SUV at that time.
During the conversation, the person who had previously exited the SUV returned and allegedly started shooting at the man.
The 18-year-old was able to get back into the van, which then pulled out of its parking spot and traveled toward the north exit of the plaza, the report said.
The alleged shooter got in the SUV, which went to the plaza’s south exit and got onto Old Hwy. 141 and started traveling north. The van did not exit the plaza, instead turning and traveling south in the parking lot while the SUV traveled north on the highway, the report said.
As the vehicles passed, shots were fired from the SUV at the van. One bullet hit the woman in her left leg, and two bullet holes were found on the van. The glass front door of the bar and grill also was shattered by a bullet, according to the report.
There were no reported injuries for anyone inside the restaurant.
The SUV continued to travel north on Old Hwy. 141 toward St. Louis County, and the van remained in the parking lot while authorities arrived, Bissell said.
The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident, and is working with St. Louis County Police to try to track down the SUV, Bissell said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
