A Hematite home was destroyed by fire

A home on Debbie Drive in Hematite was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.

A Wednesday night (March 16) fire destroyed a rural Festus house, Hematite Fire Protection District Chief Robert Hipes Jr. reports.

He said firefighters responded to an 8:40 p.m. call about a house fire at 3511 Debbie Drive.

“The house was totaled,” Hipes said today (March 17). “The garage roof was collapsed when we got there and there was heavy fire in the attic in the rest of the residence.”

He said two people were home when the fire broke out, and they escaped safely.

“They got out OK, but when they discovered the fire it was pretty far involved,” Hipes said.

He said he had no information about the two occupants other than he believes they are renters. He said he did not know the name of the owner of the ranch-style house.

Hillsboro and Jefferson R-7 fire protection districts and the Festus Fire Department assisted Hematite with the call.
