A wad of 18 counterfeit $20 bills reportedly was found outside the Express Mart convenience store, 1707 Hwy. Z, Pevely. The man who found the fake money said he saw the people who dropped it, but they claimed it was not theirs, Pevely Police Capt. Larry Miller said.
The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 15), Miller said.
“Evidently, a customer contacted an employee and handed him 18 $20 bills the person found in the parking lot,” Miller said. “He said he attempted to give the money to people parked in front of the gas station and they said (the bills) were not theirs. They left before officers arrived.”
Miller said the bogus bills looked real at first, but upon closer inspection were obviously counterfeit.
“They have Russian serial numbers,” he said. “They look like $20 bills, but the serial numbers have (Cyrillic alphabet) letters in them.”
Pevely Police have the counterfeit bills and contacted the U.S. Secret Service about the case. Anyone with information is urged to call the Pevely Police at 636-475-4498.
