Authorities are investigating the thefts of three vehicles from the Sapaugh auto dealership, 1435 McNutt St., in Herculaneum. The thefts happened about 5 a.m. Wednesday morning (Sept. 2), and one of the stolen vehicles was involved in a rollover crash almost immediately after it was driven out of the dealership, Herculaneum Police Interim Chief Sharia Kyle said.
“That was on McNutt School Road at the back entrance to the Providence subdivision. It’s a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox stolen from Sapaugh approximately 10 minutes before the crash,” she said. “There was extensive damage (to the vehicle).”
Kyle said the person who allegedly drove the Equinox off the lot was gone from the scene when police arrived.
She said the Equinox, which was valued at $29,545, was towed away.
Kyle said two cars – both 2020 Chevrolet Malibus – were stolen, and the people who allegedly drove them off the lot got away.
“I believe one of the Malibus was used to break through the fence (at the dealership) to get away,” she said.
Kyle said each of the Malibus was valued at $23,270.
As of Thursday afternoon (Sept. 3), the Malibus had not been recovered and no suspects had been identified in the ongoing investigation, she said. Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to call Herculaneum Police at 636-479-4791.
