Festus Police Patch

A driver who allegedly fled the scene after crashing his car into a guardrail along I-55 in Festus was caught a short time later at a nearby restaurant the evening of Nov. 27, authorities report.

After the accident, the driver, a 31-year-old Bonne Terre man, allegedly ran away, leaving behind three passengers, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said on Tuesday (Dec. 2).

“At 6:40 p.m., a 2010 Chevy Cobalt was southbound on I-55 driving toward the Hwy. 67 exit,” Lewis said. “He was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed, lost control, the car spun and crashed into the guardrail, witnesses said. He took off on foot and was arrested a short time later at the Festus Waffle House (1304 Veterans Blvd.). Officers said he appeared to be intoxicated. He refused all tests.”

The suspect was released pending the application for warrants, the chief said.

“We are seeking charges of leaving the scene of an accident, DWI, driving while revoked and open container alcohol,” he said.

No injuries were reported, Lewis said.

“They were lucky,” he said.

Lewis said the Cobalt was significantly damaged.
