A St. Louis man who pleaded guilty to stealing a woman’s purse outside of Walmart in Arnold in 2015 has been sent back to jail for a third time, according to court records.
Joseph Lamar Davis, 31, had his probation revoked on Dec. 6, and Jefferson County Div. 2 Circuit Judge Darrell E. Missey executed the 10-year sentence Davis previously had been sentenced to for the purse-snatching, court documents show.
On Jan. 26, 2015, Davis approached an Arnold woman in the parking lot outside Walmart, 2201 Michigan Ave., after she returned her shopping cart. He grabbed the purse from the woman’s arm and got away in a car waiting for him, the probable-cause statement in the case said.
Kevin Hayes Jr., 31, of Villa Ridge, formerly of Imperial, reportedly drove the get-away car, which also had two women in it. A witness got a partial license plate from the get-away vehicle, and police used that to track down the car and contact Hayes and the two women. All three of them identified Davis as the one who snatched the purse, the report said.
Hayes also showed police where the purse had been thrown out of the vehicle, and it was recovered, the report said.
In February 2016, Hayes was sentenced to seven years in prison for his part in the theft, court records show.
Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery, a class B felony, and in December 2015, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, after completing a treatment program, he was released in April 2016 and placed on five-years’ probation, court records indicate.
In April 2017, Davis had his probation revoked and his 10-year sentence was executed. However, he was released again in August 2017 after completing another treatment program and was placed on five-years’ probation, court documents show.
Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Maren E. Biermann handled the case.
Davis currently is in the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre.
