A fire at a detached workshop at a home in the 100 block of Lake Park Trail south of De Soto on Tuesday, afternoon Oct. 21, left a man injured and the building significantly damaged, De Soto Rural Fire Chief Tom Fitzgerald said.
He said firefighters were dispatched to the workshop at 4:39 p.m.
“The resident was welding (outside); something ignited, and high winds took it right into the building,” he said. “(Arriving) crews found heavy fire in the building, as well as exterior equipment and a 200-gallon propane tank (that were on fire). Contents are a total loss, and there is heavy damage to the building.”
Fitzgerald said the resident sustained minor burn injuries but refused medical treatment.
The fire was under control within 30 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene until 6 p.m., Fitzgerald said.
The Hillsboro, Big River and Potosi fire protection districts and the De Soto Fire Department helped with the call. The Valle Ambulance District also responded to the scene. The Jefferson R-7, Hematite and St. Clair fire protection districts and the Festus Fire Department helped with other calls De Soto Rural received during the response to the home on Lake Park Trail.
