Hereford cows

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the recent death of a Hereford cow that appeared to have been shot on the owner’s property in the 8400 block of Country Lane in Dittmer.

The cow, which was valued at about $3,500, was last seen alive at about noon on Sept. 21, when the owner was outside checking on all her cows, the Sheriff’s Office reports.

At about 6 p.m. that day, she went to check the cows again and noticed one was missing, the report said.

While she was searching for the missing cow, she heard a gunshot and shortly after found it dead on the banks of the Big River, according to the report.

The woman contacted her insurance company, and on Sept. 22, an adjuster came to her property to view the cow. When the animal was rolled over, the adjuster pointed out a bullet wound, the report said.

As of Monday (Sept. 28), there were no suspects or arrests, said Capt. Ron Arnhart of the Sheriff’s Office.

He asks anyone with information about the cow’s death to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 636-797-5515.
