The remains of a pickup and camper that caught fire Thursday along I-44 outside Eureka.

Eureka Fire Protection District crews shut down the I-44 westbound lanes near mile marker 260 just outside the Eureka city limits for at least three hours Thursday evening (May 28) due to a vehicle fire. A pickup and the tow-behind camper the truck was hauling were destroyed in the fire, Eureka Fire public information officer Scott Barthelmass said.

He said brakes on the camper caused the fire, and the driver was able to get out of the pickup before the fire spread from the camper to the truck. No one else was in the pickup, and no injuries were reported for the driver.

Barthelmass said crews were dispatched to the scene of the fire at 5:16 p.m. and arrived at 5:22 p.m. Firefighters remained on the scene until 8:50 p.m.

The Pacific, Boles and Metro West fire protection districts and the Meramec Ambulance district helped with the call.
