St. Louis County Police arrested a man and woman suspected of breaking into storage units and stealing saws from a unit at iStorage, 1699 W. Fifth St., in Eureka. It appeared four units were broken into, but items were reported missing from just one of the units, Eureka Police Lt. Michael Werges said.
A 31-year-old Eureka man called Eureka Police at about 3:20 p.m. Feb. 20 and said a Stihl concrete saw and Stihl chainsaw were stolen from his unit at iStorage. The saws were worth about $1,000, the report said.
After investigators arrived at the scene, they discovered four storage units were missing locks, but only one unit had missing items, according to the report.
On Feb. 21, Eureka Police were contacted after St. Louis County Police stopped a 2018 Kia Soul, which had been reported stolen, in the 7600 block of Telegraph Boulevard and arrested a man and woman who were in the car. Eureka Police determined the Soul had been in their city on Feb. 20, the report said.
Surveillance video from the storage business allegedly showed the Soul pull up to the electronic gate at about 7:20 a.m. Feb. 20, and the man reach out of the driver-side window to enter a code for the gate to open. There was no video of anyone breaking into the four storage units, Eureka Police reported.
However, when investigators searched the Soul, two locks with the iStorage business logo were found in the car. Investigators also allegedly found items reported stolen from a storage complex in Imperial, the report said.
As of Feb. 27, the saws had not been recovered, and Eureka Police had not filed for charges against the man or woman, Werges said.
