Eureka Police are trying to identify a man seen in surveillance video in a subdivision pool parking lot about a half hour before two women reported their vehicles were broken into and their purses stolen. One of the women said she had $50 in her purse, police reported.
Officers were called at about 3:30 p.m. July 3 to the Hilltop Village Pool, 17190 Hilltop Ridge Drive, after the thefts were discovered. The driver-side window was smashed on a 2020 Acura MDX owned by a 40-year-old Wildwood woman, and a purse was stolen from an unlocked 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee owned by a 38-year-old Eureka woman, the report said.
The Wildwood woman’s purse had $50 and other items in it, and the cost to replace the broken Acura window was estimated at about $500, according to the report.
Surveillance video allegedly showed a man drive a black sedan into the parking at about 3 p.m. and park next to one of the victims’ vehicles and then get out of the car before quickly getting back into it and driving away. The man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and red sweatpants, the report said.
As of July 14, the purses had not been recovered, and the man had not been identified, Sgt. Michael Tapp said. He asks anyone with information about the incident to call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
