The man found dead Aug. 14 south of Festus from a possible drug overdose was Kerry S. Sutton, 52, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

His last known address was Sullivan, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said.

Authorities received a call about the incident at about 4:35 p.m. from an area known locally as “the Slab” next to Plattin Creek.

“Deputies responded for a report of an unconscious male on the beach area for a possible overdose,” Bissell said. “Upon arrival deputies and EMS crews confirmed the male was deceased. During the investigation, they located an acquaintance of the man sitting in a vehicle nearby also in and out of consciousness, possibly under the influence of narcotics. Upon speaking to her, she advised she and the deceased male had been using meth and heroin throughout the day and he also used some fentanyl.”

Bissell said the 40-year-old woman, whose last known address is St. Louis, was taken to an area hospital for complaints of chest pains.

The woman has not been charged, and the investigation is ongoing, he said.
