A 35-year-old Pevely man and 39-year-old Ste. Genevieve woman were arrested for allegedly breaking into and stealing items from a home and trailer in the 1100 block of Vineland School Road southwest of De Soto, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A neighbor called the police on Feb. 18 after seeing a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee on the victim’s property. The man told the neighbor the owner gave them permission to be at the home, the report said.

Deputies stopped the Jeep in the 12000 block of Hwy. 21, and they allegedly found stolen items in a trailer connected to the SUV. The deputies also went to the home on Vineland School Road and saw the home and an enclosed trailer had been broken into, according to the report.

The homeowner was called to where the deputies stopped the SUV, and he said he did not know the man and woman in the Jeep. He said the items in the trailer belonged to him, the report said.

The man and woman in the Jeep were taken to the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, where they were booked and released pending the application for warrants, according to the report.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will seek a charge against both the man and woman through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for second-degree burglary, Capt. Matt Moore said.
