Joseph R. Lagana, 29, of Pevely has been sentenced to seven years in prison following gun and drug charges, court records show.

On May 13, 2013, Lagana was found in Jefferson County with a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which he wasn’t supposed to have because he was a convicted felon, the report said.

Also that day he was found with marijuana, as well as syringes he intended to use to inject methamphetamine, according to the report.

Lagana pleaded guilty to the charges and on Jan. 28, he was sentenced by Jefferson County Div. 4 Circuit Judge Mark T. Stoll to seven years for unlawful possession of a firearm and two 120-day jail sentences – one each for the drug and the drug paraphernalia charges.

The three terms are to be served concurrently, or at the same time.

In addition, Lagana may be released early if he successfully completes a 120-day treatment program, court papers show.

Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Steven W. Jerrell handled the case.

Lagana previously was convicted of possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia tied to an August 2008 incident in St. Louis County.

He was sentenced in April 2010 to five years but the sentence was suspended and he was released on three years’ probation in July 2010 after completing a treatment program.
