Pevely Police patch

No foul play is suspected in the drowning deaths of a man and a woman, both 36 and from the Horine area, who were found in a Pevely backyard swimming pool Friday (Sept. 4).

The victims were Matthew Kissee and Davina Crane, who were described as boyfriend and girlfriend, Pevely Police Det. Tony Moutray said.

He said the pair may have drowned the previous day. Evidence of alcohol and drugs was present at the above-ground pool, Moutray said.

“It will probably take four to six weeks for the toxicology tests to come back,” Moutray said.

The detective said Crane’s mother had gone to the home, in the 9300 block of Lakeview Drive, to check on the couple earlier the day they were found, but did not go to the pool, which is located at the rear of the property in a somewhat isolated area.

“You had to actually walk up to the pool to see them,” Moutray said.

Kissee lived at the home, which is owned by his parents. His parents were out of town, police reported.

Moutray said police found several empty cans and shot-sized liquor bottles at the scene.

“There were prescription pills unaccounted for,” he said.

The prescription, written for Crane, was for clonazepam, an anti-depressant with side effects that include drowsiness and poor coordination.

A neighbor found the bodies after being asked by one of the parents to check on the pair. Police were called at 9:06 p.m. There was no sign of forced entry or anything wrong at the house.

“Everybody knew they were there, but they just couldn’t get ahold of them,” Moutray said.
