A 53-year-old man police are calling a person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the death of Jamie Schmidt, 53, of House Springs, who was shot at the Catholic Supply Store in the Ballwin on Monday (Nov. 19), St. Louis County Police reported.
The person of interest was taken into custody this morning (Nov. 21), the report said.
St. Louis County Police wouldn’t say where officers found the man, but according to reports from other news outlets and social media, the man was found at an Imperial mobile home community.
Sgt. Shawn McGuire said he could not provide any other information about the person of interest.
“Detectives are investigating this right now,” he said at 1 p.m. today.
McGuire said more information would be released if charges are filed in the case.
At 3:19 p.m. Monday, a man reportedly walked into the store, 14069 Manchester Road, committed a sexual assault, shot Schmidt, who was a customer at the store, and then fled, St. Louis County Police reported.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found Schmidt suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was transported to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, the report said.
A crowd filled the St. Anthony Padua Catholic Church in High Ridge Tuesday evening (Nov. 20), when a Mass was held to remember Schmidt and comfort the parish.
Schmidt, a member of the church, was married and a mother of three children.
