Eureka Fire

A malfunctioning light ballast led to smoke inside Geggie Elementary School on June 5. There was no fire in the building, Eureka Fire Protection District spokesman Scott Barthelmass said.

A smoke alarm went off in the building, and firefighters were dispatched at 2:50 p.m. to the school at 430 Bald Hill Road in Eureka. They arrived at 2:53 p.m. and were able to clear the smoke and leave by 2:59 p.m., Barthelmass said.

He said he didn’t know if anyone was in the school building when it filled with smoke.

Barthelmass said the light was the only thing damaged and probably will need to be replaced.
