A Jefferson County jury recently found David Zufall Jr., 38, of Fenton guilty of second-degree assault stemming from a road-rage incident when he shot another man multiple times outside a Walgreens store, according to authorities.
Zufall faces up to seven years in prison for the class D felony. He will be held in the Jefferson County Jail until his sentencing, which is set for Aug. 21 in front of Jefferson County Div. 4 Circuit Judge Brenda Stacey, court documents indicated.
According to the probable-cause statement in the case, in May 2020, Zufall was driving erratically and cut off a man who was traveling with his grandchild. The man followed Zufall into the Walgreens parking lot at 1210 Sugar Creek Square near the intersection of New Sugar Creek Road and Hwy. 30 in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton.
The victim parked in front of Zufall and confronted him. Then, Zufall pulled out a gun and the victim backed away, the report said.
Zufall shot the victim at least four times, hitting him in the chest and stomach area. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated. No one else was injured from the gunfire, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported in 2020.
Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Courtney Goodwin handled the case.
“Thank you jurors for your attention and patience,” the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office posted on its Twitter account on June 14, the day of the verdict. “A huge shout out to the witnesses and @JeffCoMoSheriff (Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office) for their help. First assistant Goodwin did an amazing job advocating for the victim.”
