Two men allegedly stole cigarettes from Imperial gas stations

James Dean Hanna

One of two men charged with allegedly stealing cigarettes from two different Imperial gas stations was recently arrested. Warrants have been issued for the other man’s arrest, according to court documents.

James Dean Hanna, 53, of St. Charles was arrested Dec. 1, and as of Dec. 10, he was being held on a $29,000 bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court records show.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell on Dec. 10 said Mark Anthony Marbley Jr., 38, of St. Louis had not been arrested since the warrants for his arrest were issued in August and September.

Both men have been charged with second-degree robbery, a class B felony punishable by five to 15 years in prison, and stealing, a class A misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000, according to court documents.

The two are accused of working together to steal cigarettes in May from gas stations on Imperial Main Street in Imperial. Marbley allegedly stole the cigarettes from each gas station, injuring an employee at one of the businesses, and Hanna allegedly drove a Cadillac to and from the gas stations, court records said.

The two were charged with misdemeanor stealing after Marbley allegedly stole three cartons of Kool King cigarettes on May 25 from the Petro Mart gas station, 1200 Imperial Main St. He allegedly stole the cartons by walking behind the convenience store’s counter, taking them and walking out, according to the case’s probable-cause statement.

Hanna drove the Cadillac that Marbley was seen getting in and out of at the gas station. The three cartons were worth a combined $267.31, the report said.

The two were charged with burglary after Marbley on May 27 allegedly stole a carton of Lucky Strike, a carton of Kool King, a carton of Kool 100’s, a carton of Salem 83 Gold and one pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes from the Mobile on the Run gas station, 1111 Imperial Main St., according to the case’s probable-cause statement.

Marbley again allegedly went behind the convenience store’s counter to steal the cigarettes. An employee attempted to block the door as Marbley tried to leave, but he allegedly shoved her down, the report said.

The woman injured her right hip, wrist and hand. She was treated at an area Urgent Care clinic, according to the report.

Hanna again drove the Cadillac that Marbley was seen getting in and out of at the gas station. The combined value of the stolen cigarettes was $353.04, the report said.

The two men were interviewed in June. Hanna allegedly admitted to driving Marbley to the gas stations to steal cigarettes, and Marbley allegedly confessed to stealing the cigarettes and pushing the employee down, according to the report.
