A 43-year-old Independence man who allegedly stole a pickup in Arnold shot and killed himself after being approached by deputies from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Arnold Police reported.

The Independence man drove to Arnold in a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe, which he allegedly stole from his girlfriend, along with a gun, and he abandoned the SUV in the parking lot at the Applebee’s restaurant, 1110 Big Bill Road, in Arnold, according to a report

Then, at about 11 a.m. April 2, the man allegedly went to St. Louis Gutter and Siding, 18 Tenbrook Industrial Park, in Arnold and damaged a window to get inside and stole a set of keys to a 2002 Ford F-150 that he stole, a report said.

The man then drove to Saline County, where he approached a woman at her home about using a phone to call for a battery charge for the pickup. The woman reported the incident to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Arnold Police Lt. Tom Leassner said.

When a deputy caught up to the man in the pickup, he got out of it and reportedly shot himself in the head with the .38-caliber revolver, Leassner said.
