A person died early this morning (Jan. 28) in a fire at a waste disposal company in Imperial, Rock Fire Chief Jeff Broombaugh reported.

The Rock Community Fire Protection District got a call around 4:25 a.m. about a fire at Bob’s Disposal Services, 883 Big Z Blvd. in Imperial. When the first crew arrived at 4:32 a.m., there was heavy fire coming from the building, Broombaugh said.

Employees told firefighters one employee was inside the building. The employees had tried to get into the building, but they were hampered by a locked door, Broombaugh said.

He said the person inside the locked building died, and another employee was treated by Rock Township Ambulance personnel at the scene for an injury.

Broombaugh said the cause of the fire has not been determined, and the state Fire Marshal’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Rock Fire staff are investigating it.

The fire was under control by 5:02 a.m., Broombaugh said.

The Antonia Fire Protection District assisted with the call, he said.

Bob’s disposal reportedly has canceled residential trash routes in Jefferson and St. Louis counties today.
