James B. Hoffman, 41, of Fenton has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender, his third such offense, court records indicate.

Hoffman was required to register as a sex offender because he previously pleaded guilty to second-degree statutory rape, a felony, stemming from an incident in December 1999 in Ste. Genevieve County, according to court papers.

After that, he pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender, as well as to second-degree burglary, both felonies, tied to a November 2004 incident in St. Francois County, court documents show.

Hoffman again pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender connected to a January 2014 incident in Jefferson County, the report said.

He never registered as a sex offender in Jefferson County despite living here, and, after pleading guilty to the offense for the third time, Jefferson County Div. 1 Circuit Judge Robert G. Wilkins sentenced him on March 1 to 10 years in prison, according to court records.

Also on March 1, Wilkins sentenced Hoffman to two seven-year terms for felony burglary and felony possession of a controlled substance stemming from an August 2014 incident, when he kicked in a front door to a Fenton-area home and threatened to kill people there, the report said.

Wilkins also sentenced Hoffman to seven years for felony possession of a controlled substance tied to another August 2014 incident in Jefferson County.

The 10-year term and the three seven-year terms are to be served concurrently, or at the same time, according to the report.

Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Marie Pudlowski handled the case involving Hoffman’s failure to register as a sex offender, and assistant prosecuting attorney Catherine M. Robertson handled the other cases.
