A woman who stopped to give a ride to a female hitchhiker might now believe the old adage, “no good deed goes unpunished.”

After the driver picked up the hitchhiker on Hwy. M near I-55 in Barnhart, the hitchhiker allegedly assaulted the driver and then stole her car, which was valued at $10,000, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The suspect, a 38-year-old Bonne Terre woman, was later found with the car at Old Hwy. 21 and Rhonda Sue Drive in Imperial. She was arrested, the report said.

According to the report, the theft happened about 2:20 a.m. Dec. 8, after the victim, driving a 2016 Ford Focus, spotted the suspect on the right-side shoulder and, feeling sorry for her, stopped to check on her. The suspect reportedly asked for a ride to a location in the 5700 block of Old Hwy. 21 in Otto, and the driver took her there.

When the driver stopped the car at the location, the suspect allegedly said she had a weapon and started arguing with and kicking the driver while they were in the front seat of the car. The victim got out of the car, and the suspect allegedly moved from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat and drove away, the report said.
