Firefighters responded to shed fire that has been traced to welding that occurred earlier in the day at a residence south of Hillsboro.
Hillsboro Fire Chief Brian Gaudet said his department received a call at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 7 of a shed fire at a residence in the 11100 block of Hwy. 21, south of Hillsboro.
“Crews were dispatched for a shed on fire with exposure (to other homes) in a mobile home park,” Gaudet said. “They arrived and found a fairly sizeable shed with heavy smoke showing. They pulled out a hand line and quickly extinguished the fire. It took about five minutes to put it out.”
He said no one was in the shed at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported by firefighters during the incident.
The cause appears to be smoldering slag from welding, he said.
“The shed is a shop for the owner, as well as a storage area,” Gaudet said. “The owner had been welding. We believe that slag from the welding smoldered and later set fire to the rubber flooring.”
He described the damage to the shed as “slight to medium to the interior of the shed.”
He said Hillsboro did not require assistance from other agencies in the incident.
