Trenton A. Crane, 16, of Pevely drowned in the Current River Tuesday afternoon (July 23) in Shannon County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

At about 3:40 p.m., Crane was attempting to swim across the river at Blue Spring when he “became fatigued, inhaled water and was unable to resurface." He was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. by Shannon County coroner Tim Denton, according to the report.

Crane was a Dunklin R-5 School District student who completed his sophomore year at Herculaneum High School during the 2018-2019 school year, district spokesman Matt Lichtenstein said today (July 24).

"He was an energetic young man who enjoyed life and he will be missed," Herculaneum High principal John Crabtree said. ”Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, including his younger brother, Tyler, and his older brother, Dylan, who graduated in the spring."

Crabtree also said the school has counselors available for students who are struggling with the loss.

Superintendent Stan Stratton said on the district's Facebook page that counselors were available to students from 1-3 p.m. today in the Herculaneum High School office, 1 Blackcat Drive.
