A former Crystal City, who already is serving a five-year prison sentence, will appear in Jefferson County Court on charges that he allegedly injured five people when he caused an accident while fleeing a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper in Arnold, court records show.
Travis Dwayne Perkins, 41, is scheduled to appear in court on March 16 after being charged with four counts of second-degree felony assault and one count of resisting arrest. He was transferred on Jan. 29 to the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, according to court and jail records.
Perkins is already serving a five-year sentence at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre. He had been convicted on charges of felony stealing, failure to register as a sex offender and possession of a controlled substance, Missouri Department of Corrections records show.
According to the case’s probable-cause statement, a trooper on April 6, 2024, stopped a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer that was traveling south on Hwy. 141. The trooper stopped the car because it had license plates that were registered to a truck.
When the trooper approached the Mitsubishi, Perkins allegedly sped away. The trooper followed Perkins south on Hwy. 141, until Perkins allegedly went through a red light at the intersection of Astra Way and crossed over onto a northbound lane on Hwy. 141 while continuing to drive south, the report said.
Perkins’ Mitsubishi ran into a Toyota that was traveling south on the highway. The Toyota went off the right side of the road, and the Mitsubishi stopped on the highway, according to the report.
A woman and man traveling in the Mitsubishi and three people in the Toyota were transported to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County, the report said.
The woman in the Mitsubishi was pregnant and had to undergo an emergency C-section, but the baby died. The woman also fractured vertebrae in her neck and back, according to the report.
A man, who was not described as a victim in the Highway Patrol report, injured his face, head and left leg, the report said.
One person in the Toyota had a broken left hip, crushed eye socket, two broken ribs and a fractured skull, and another person in the car had a broken leg and ruptured spleen. A second person in the Toyota had minor injuries, according to the report.
At the hospital, a nurse told a trooper that Perkins had a smoking pipe with residue when he arrived for treatment. The trooper also learned Perkins was wanted on warrants by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Arnold Police, and Perkins had not registered the Mitsubishi on the sex offender registry as he was required to, the report said.
