A 60-year-old Eureka man’s car and dog were recovered unharmed two days after being stolen from outside a PNC Bank, 15 Augustin Road. The man’s 2023 Ford Mustang convertible and his shih tzu were found in Westchester County north of New York City, Eureka Police reported.

The victim called police at about 2 p.m. July 10 after the car and dog were stolen. He told police a man was talking to him about his Mustang outside the bank, and the suspect suddenly got into the Mustang and drove away. The victim said he did not know the suspect, according to the report.

Police in New York stopped the car at about 8:30 a.m. July 12 in Westchester County. A 33-year-old Des Moines, Iowa, man was driving the car, and the dog was still in the Mustang, the report said.

Eureka Police Sgt. Bob Watson said the car and dog have been returned to the owner. He also said police in New York will seek a charge against the Des Moines man driving a stolen vehicle.
