Firefighters battled frigid temperatures Sunday night (March 3) while extinguishing a blaze at a home in the 13300 block of Hwy. JJ near Hwy. 67 south of De Soto. Two adults escaped the house uninjured, said Assistant Chief Tom Fitzgerald of the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District.
De Soto Rural Fire got a call at 10 p.m. about the blaze. Firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly, Fitzgerald said.
He said the fire started in the fireplace and spread to a wall.
“The exact cause has not been determined,” Fitzgerald said Thursday (March 7).
He said firefighters remained on the scene for about an hour.
Fitzgerald said no firefighters were injured, but the call was tough because of the cold weather.
“It was in single digits down to 0,” he said.
Fitzgerald said the damage to the home was not severe.
“They’re able to stay there,” he said. “We did not have to pull the electrical.”
The De Soto Fire Department and the R-7, Hematite and Hillsboro fire protection districts helped with the call, as did the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District.
