A 72-year-old Fenton-area man accidentally shot himself in the hand when he tried to clear his firearm of a jam. The incident occurred about 2:15 p.m. April 15 at the man’s home in the 100 block of Jeffery Circle in unincorporated Fenton, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The man told investigators he was trapshooting behind his home when he had a jam in the firearm. While attempting to clear the jam, he placed his left hand over the gun barrel and the firearm discharged, firing a bullet that entered and exited his left ring finger. The bullet also struck his pinkie finger, the report said.

At the hospital, the man told deputies doctors didn’t think he’d lose his finger, according to the report.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said May 8 that it didn’t appear charges would be sought against the man.
