Saline Valley firefighters struggled to reach a brush fire at 1164 Terry Jean Lane in unincorporated Fenton on Sunday (Feb. 20), which burned about 5 acres of land, Chief Bob Dunn said.

He said the fire was caused by a broken high power Ameren line, and crews had trouble getting to the fire because of the heavy woods and wet, muddy ground.

Fortunately, it was a-slow moving fire because of the wet ground, Dunn added.

No property was damaged in the fire, but Dunn said a firefighter twisted his ankle and was transported by Rock Township Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, where he was treated and released.

The firefighter was back at work later that night, Dunn said.

He said a passerby called to report the fire at 5:31 p.m., and crews arrived on the scene just one minute later because it was close to Station 2 at 2198 Saline Road in unincorporated Fenton. However, crews could not get to the fire until about 6:30 p.m. The fire was extinguished by 7 p.m., and crews were on the scene until 9:20 p.m.

The Antonia, Cedar Hill, Goldman, High Ridge, Hillsboro and Rock Community fire protection districts helped with the call.
