Eureka Police patch

Eureka Police are investigating the suspected use of five $100 bills at the Schnucks grocery store, 245 E. Fifth St. The man, who allegedly used the fake money in Eureka, also is being sought by the Springfield Police for allegedly using counterfeit money, police reported.

Officers were called at about 12:15 p.m. May 15 to the grocery store after a cashier reported to her manager that she believed the bills used to purchase drinks and a gift card were fake. The cashier, a 66-year-old Eureka woman, used a counterfeit detector marker on the bills, and even though the bills passed the test, she believed they were not real, the report said.

Two of the bills did not have the see-through water mark on the correct side. When the bills were examined by Eureka Police’s counterfeit detector, the bills failed, according to the report.

A man purchased seven drinks with the $100 bills, and he asked for the change from the purchase to be put on a gift card, the report said.

The man is described as being in his 20s with a full sleeve of tattoos on his left arm. He was seen in surveillance video wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and black shoes with white shoelaces, according to the report.

As of Tuesday, the man had not been located, Capt. Michael Werges said. He asked anyone with information about the man to call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
