A 49-year-old Eureka man and 39-year-old Cadet woman were arrested for alleged drug possession after being stopped by Eureka Police on Fifth Street. An officer stopped a car the man was driving after he exited I-44 onto Hwy. 109 and allegedly illegally crossed three lanes to turn onto Fifth Street, police reported.
The officer at about 10:10 p.m. Jan. 22 stopped a 2016 Chrysler 200 after seeing the car exit the interstate and make the turn. The man who was driving the car didn’t have a driver’s license, and the woman appeared to be trying to hide something in the center consoles, the report said.
The officer learned the man’s driver’s license had been revoked and that he was wanted by the Jefferson County and Franklin County sheriff’s offices and the Sunset Hills and O’Fallon police departments. The man was arrested on the active warrants, according to the report.
An Ellisville Police officer with a police dog was called to the scene after the man and woman would not allow the Eureka Police officers to search the car because it did not belong to them and they reportedly didn’t know what was inside the car. The police dog indicated there may be illegal drugs inside the car, the report said.
When a Eureka Police officer searched the car, he allegedly found a bag containing what appeared to be psilocybin mushrooms, two bags with white crystal-like substances inside them, three used syringes, nine unused syringes and a broken scale. Two Illinois license plates that were registered to a different vehicle also were allegedly found in the car, according to the report.
The officers then arrested the woman as well. She told the officers she did not know those items were inside the car, the report said.
The man and woman were taken to the Police Station, where they were booked. The man was then transported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the woman was released pending the application for a warrant, according to the report.
Depending on results of the drug analysis, Eureka Police will seek charges against the man and woman through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, Lt. Brett Grittini said.
He also said the man was issued summonses to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for alleged improper lane use, driving with a revoked license, driving without insurance and using incorrect license plates.
