A 17-year-old Eureka man was arrested after an alleged domestic assault and a short police pursuit through woods. The assault happened just before noon Jan. 12 in the 200 block of Walden Court, Eureka Police reported.

A 59-year-old man told police a family member punched him in the face during an argument. The 59-year-old had a bloody nose, but he refused medical treatment and did not want to pursue charges, the report said.

The 17-year-old was leaving the house when officers arrived, and when he saw the police cars, he allegedly started to run. Officers pursued the man into a wooded area before catching up to him on the front porch of a nearby home, according to the report.

The teenager had a backpack, which he ditched while running through the woods. Officers were able to locate the backpack, and they allegedly found two bags containing a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana, the report said.

The 17-year-old was initially taken back to the home where the alleged assault occurred, and at first he said the backpack and marijuana did not belong to him. However, after the teen was arrested and taken to the Police Station, he allegedly admitted that he hit the 59-year-old and that the backpack and its contents belonged to him, according to the report.

The teen told police he was angry because he had lost his phone, the report said.

He was issued summonses to appear in Municipal Court for third-degree assault and possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana, Capt. David Wilson said.
