Eureka Police patch

A Eureka dental care business’s internet-based pay system was breached and $9,884 was stolen, Eureka Police reported.

The Oral Facial Surgery Institute, 60 E. North St., told police that on Jan. 28 someone gained access to its payment system and transferred the money to a credit card in England that is through the Bank of Scotland. The internet system allows patients to pay their bill with credit card information, police reported.

It did not appear any patients’ credit card or personal information was taken during the breach. The system is run by an outside party, which told the business to file a claim to recoup the stolen funds, according to the report.

As of Feb. 14, there were no suspects and Eureka Police had not received any other reports of information or money taken during the breach, Capt. David Wilson said.
